Summary:My choice to focus on literature in this paper and use literary work arises from my endeavor to illustrate the idea that the loss of the self and the process of fusion of the individual identity with the community / national values is a narra­tive that spans in time and that should be viewed through a broader cultural context, and that the tendency to obliterate the individual self plays the socio-cultural role for preserving the values (especially the propagation of authenticity) of the com­munity or nation.
