Total 271 samples of patients having Influenza like illness were tested using RT-PCR. 150 samples tested positive out of which 114 were adults. All 114 H1N1 positive adult patients were admitted in respiratory isolation ward as per categories defined by Ministry of health and Family Welfare (MOHFW). Data regarding symptoms, duration of illness prior to admission, co-morbid conditions, clinical presentation on admission, progress during hospital stay, overall duration of hospitalization and requirement of non-invasive and invasive ventilation were studied. Non-invasive ventilation was started when patients started developing signs / symptoms of acute lung injury / acute respiratory failure like tachypnea, falling oxygen saturation (SpO2 < 90%), tachycardia, need of high FiO2, drowsiness, respiratory muscle fatigue, use of accessory muscles of respiration, etc. The patients who required mechanical ventilation had a longer duration of illness before hospitalization and incidence of co-morbid conditions were also high. Outcome and prognosis of patients requiring mechanical ventilation is presented here. Total 46 patients required mechanical ventilation. Out of 46 patients, 30 died and 16 were successfully discharged. None of the patients on invasive ventilation survived.
