| Summary: | Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, there was a large group of men, women and children on the fringes of society who were unable to subsist on their own and had to make the most of private and public charity. As a matter of course, they were helped by these two forms of assistance. Current research analyzes these groups of people who were helped by the Alms Houses in the Alto Minho, Portugal, during the above mentioned period and investigates the reasons why this population was in fact in such a destitute state. The solutions that these assistance institutions forwarded, the meaning of alms, their durability and the period in which they existed are investigated. The importance and significance of alms in the Old Regime will be also under analysis. Since Christian piety is for all, the activities of the Alms Houses and the main benefited groups shall be discussed.<br>Nas franjas da sociedade encontrava-se um volume alargado de homens, mulheres e crian&ccedil;as ao longo dos s&eacute;culos XVII e XVIII, pessoas incapacitadas de proverem a sua subsist&ecirc;ncia, recorrendo &agrave; caridade, fosse ela particular ou privada. Normalmente, eram ajudados por estas duas formas de assist&ecirc;ncia em simult&acirc;neo. O nosso trabalho pretende conhecer e analisar os grupos de providos pelas Miseric&oacute;rdias do Alto Minho - Portugal &ndash; durante o per&iacute;odo assinalado e compreender as raz&otilde;es que atiraram esta popula&ccedil;&atilde;o para a pobreza. Pretendemos ainda estudar as respostas destas institui&ccedil;&otilde;es de assist&ecirc;ncia, conhecer as esmolas, a sua durabilidade e avaliar os tempos em que eram praticadas. &Eacute; ainda nosso objectivo reflectir sobre o significado e import&acirc;ncia da d&aacute;diva no Antigo Regime. Sabendo que a piedade crist&atilde; se devia direccionar para todos os necessitados, pretendemos analisar a actua&ccedil;&atilde;o das Miseric&oacute;rdias e conhecer os principais grupos beneficiados. |
