| Summary: | Over the last three decadesthere have been significant changes in governinghigher education institutions in almost all European countries.Many new nationalhigher education acts have been passed.Severalreforms have had the keyobjective of enhancing theautonomy of higher education institutions; in somecountries this has entailedchanging the legal status of the institutionsand theiremployees, and greater financial freedom. The timing and breadth of reformsdiffer across Europe. InMiddle Europe, in the post-communist countriespoliticalchanges drastically changed the higher education landscape in a very shortperiodoftime in the early 1990s, whereasin the Western European countries the reformswere implemented gradually.In my paper I summarize the most importantchanges in university governance in Europe. |
