Description
Summary:Introduction and objectives Animal assisted intervention (AAI) is becoming an increasingly more popular method for supporting conventional therapies. There are many studies confirming the effectiveness of this type of activity. The aim of the study is presentation of the possibilities of using different species of animals in therapy (in comparison), and expanding knowledge of the problem. Description of the state of knowledge Among the animals most frequently involved in therapeutic interventions with humans are horses and dogs. However, depending on the patient’s needs, it is possible to select other species, e.g. guinea pig. Therapeutic animals not only support the patient’s body functions and motor skills (as it is considered by many people), but they may also exert an effect on other domains of health. The development of social competences, improvement of general well-being, an impact on psychological health and improvement of body functioning, as well as support in the education process, are only a few of the many positive influences that animal therapy can bring about for participants. Conclusions A review of research and literature provided an insight into the possibilities for the introduction of animals into the treatment process as a supportive factor. The above- mentioned animal species illustrate the diverse possibilities of animal therapy. Due to the holistic impact of such interventions on the patient, it can be used in various cases. The use of animal therapy provides an opportunity for more effective and faster results of conventional therapies.
