ARCHITECTURAL TREATISES AND REPRESENTATION IN 16TH-CENTURY VALENCIA (SPAIN)

The following article focuses on architecture books and graphic sources available during the 16th century in the Valencian architectural scene, in order to carry out an in-depth analysis of the compositional mechanisms available to Valencian architects of that period. The analysis covers not only the conceptual approach, but also the application of innovative graphic composition tools. To that purpose, notary registers and inventories of the main humanist libraries of the time, such as that of the Duke of Calabria or the Marquis of Cenete, have been analysed, as well as those of smaller libraries belonging to minor architects. Consequently, said analysis reveals a scenario in which rather important books in the dissemination of Renaissance architecture, e.g. Filarete’s treatise or the Codex Escurialensis, were present in Valencia at a time when architects were learning how to use the latest graphic and theoretical sources.
