Description
Summary:In this study the contents and formal features of "In the Specimen of My Brother" (Am Bespiel meines Bruders, 2003) by Uwe Timm, a major second-generation writer of post- World War II German literature, have been examined within the context of memorial literature. At the focal point of the text stands a frontal diary noted at the Russian Front by Karl Heinz who voluntarily joined the Skull Units of SSs in 1942. However, the most important feature of the text is that the writer presents the story by basing it on the family memory and the cultural memory due to his lack of data. For this reason, the work, in which modern and postmodern expression techniques are used together, constructs the story in a way where ction, biographical, and historical documents are intermingled. Uwe Timm's use of different literary forms in his work also indicates the author's search for a form other than the usual biographical text structure. In this study, the ways in which communicative / family memories are identied with cultural memory on the basis of a diary and ultimately linked to the main historical memory are examined.
