Summary: | The US elections, which culminated with the siege of the Capitol building, brought a surplus of instability to the international system, already hard hit by the pandemic crisis. Both economically and geopolitically, the world is in a period of transgression and metamorphosis, while the horizon looks rather gloomy. Despite domestic wounds, the United States still has the largest military power, the most influential economy, the most complex alliance system, and the most efficient soft power. But its hegemonic status is now strongly contested by actors such as China and Russia, thus the prospect of maintaining primacy involves a fierce battle. The US no longer has the capacity to stop or prevent China's rise to the status of a great power. And one must not forget that Trump's trade war against Beijing has shown two economies too interdependent to be disconnected. However, the United States still has the opportunity to define the environment in which China rises, which will probably lead to a resurgence of multilateralism and working closer than ever with its traditional friends. Without the ability to regain Europe confidence and re-establish the transatlantic link, Washington will not have the capacity to curb China's hegemonic reflexes. |
