Summary:From the point of view of the ideas formulated earlier by V. V. Davydov and the author of this article, we analyze the effects of imagination in the creative process of mastering culture by a preschool child. Imagination is not considered as a particular mental function, but as a universal ability (E. V. Ilyenkov). Adjustments are made to the understanding of the nature of the child’s imagination. The material of the educational project “Paths” reveals the developmental potential of preschool education, the priority of which is the formation of imagination.
