"VIVA EL REY": acclamation and celebration for D. José I in Pernambuco

This article analyzes some celebrations held for King D. José I in Pernambuco, more precisely in the town of Recife and in the city of Olinda, for the occasions of his acclamation and celebration for his life and health due to the events of the earthquake and attack . From the practice of celebrating the king without his actual presence, we see these demonstrations as a way of bringing the sovereign to the locality with the aid of his representatives formed by the members of the local elites, who organized and participated in these celebrations. We have analyzed these feasts as an efficient resource for the king's exaltation and affirmation of royal power as well as a form of loyalty and loyalty to the monarch by his distant vassals.
