Summary: | Peri Urban Milk Production in Southern Senegal. Seasonality of Supply and Economic Performances. Peri urban milk system of Kolda (South of Senegal) made the object of this survey through the physical flux analysis and the decomposition of costs and margins. The daily mean production of peri urban exploitations is 8.9 liters in dry season and 12.4 liters in rainy season. Rates of marketing are respectively 75% and 52% during the same periods and show a strong market orientation of this system, particularly in dry season. The profit margins by liter are 64.5 FCFA for the production and 76.4 FCFA for the transformation. In spite of the interesting performances on the technical, organizational and economic plan, the system remains vulnerable of the fact of the uncertainty of the supply. The seasonality of the production is transmitted to the levels of supply and market prices. The durability of the peri urban system depends on the contractual arrangements for a secure supply, the reduction of production costs, the organization of actors and the improvement of the institutional environment.
