The general impression is that the municipalities are primarily considering public lighting as a measure for crime prevention and traf</span><span>fi</span><span>c </span><span>fl</span><span>uidization, an approach that very often has a negative effect upon the ambiance and identity of the public space. </span></p><p><span>This is the context in which the present paper is proposing a new role for the public lighting system, a role in which the light is actively contributing to the revitalization and the attractiveness of the public space. The evolution of public lighting technologies has made it a lot easier for the urban designers to emphasize the identity of the urban landscape in the night, to create and in</span><span>fl</span><span>uence behaviors and attitudes within the users and in the same time to provide the traditional functional role in a much more ef</span><span>fi</span><span>cient and environmentally friendly manner.
