Brejo Grande is a coastal city of the state of Sergipe, which is located at the estuarine environment of São Francisco River. Nowadays, there are communities officially recognized as quilombolas, whose living depends on the artisanal fishing, the capture of crab and shellfish. This work aims to analyze the changes of the daily life of these traditional fishing communities of Brejo Grande relating to the environmental dynamics changes and with the new economic orientations. The studies were developed during the execution of a university extension project. Methodologically we adopted the Territory category, the systemic principles and the foundations of participatory research. The basic procedures were bibliographical and documentary survey, interviews and fieldwork. The results showed that fishing continues to be important in the social reproduction and source of income of the local traditional families. Actually, there is an orientation towards the development of tourism and aquaculture activities - fish farming and shrimp farming, identified by communities as a potential threat to artisanal fishing activity.https://seer.ufs.br/index.php/geonordeste/article/view/6309/pdfArtisanal fishing;traditional communities;
