Summary: | The main objective of this article is to analyze the discursive construction of social identities in an opinion text published by “Jornal de Londrina”. The theoretical and analytical framework used is the Critical Discourse Analysis and Argumentative Semantics. The analysis developed showed that the lexical selection is the main linguistic-argumentative mechanism used along with modal evaluation to chain arguments and construct sense for the final argument. The lexical choice creates a dichotomy between good and bad, desirable and undesirable and culminate with the argument for the punishment of what is bad and not desirable. This discourse, therefore, acts upon social construction of reality and subject identities.
