Summary: | In order to reconsider the prejudice of the servility which allegedly characterized the relation of ancient rhetoricians towards their “classics”, we examine in this paper the evolution of the use of models from Isocrates’ pedagogy to Hermogenes’ ideai. One thing appears distinctly: after a period when imitation is personal (the pupil imitates the master), this use is progressively mediated by more and more sophisticated formal categories which introduce minute technical parameters and allow a personal reorganisation and –thus– a free appropriation of stylistic devices. |
