| Summary: | The social world as a concept, before becoming a theme for Anselm Strauss, Tamotsu Shibutani and Howard Becker, already had a long history with the sociology of Chicago. The aim of this paper is to reformulate an ecological perspective on social worlds through a re-reading of some of George H. Mead’s texts and exploring his heritage amongst the post 1945 generation, generally described as the second Chicago school of sociology. This means revisiting the concepts of experience, world, communication and culture, drawing on pragmatist philosophy and empirical work in the social sciences. The programmatic intent is an ecology of publics as described by John Dewey, which can account for how these find their development in social worlds.
