Summary:Purpose. To estimate the efficiency of the terahertz radiation in the frequency of the molecular spectrum of radiation and absorption of atmospheric oxygen of 129.0GHz in a complex pleoto-orthoptic treatment of amblyopia and elimination of functional scotoma in children. Material and methods. In the study 75 patients (aged from 3 to 9 years) were examined and treated: 33 children with anisometropia and 42 with dis-binocular amblyopia, 35 children with a functional scotoma were surveyed and treated. All children underwent the standard ophthalmic examination, additionally there were used: optical coherent tomography, electrophysiological investigations with the registration of photopic negative response. For the first time we applied the terahertz radiation in the frequency of the molecular spectrum of radiation and absorption of atmospheric oxygen of 129.0 GHz at the power of 100mV in the mode of the continuous oscillation of biological active points (BAP) – VB1, TR23 in children with amblyopia and in the mode of amplitude-modulated oscillation of biological active points (BAP) – VB1, E2 and TR23 in patients with functional scotoma. Results. The visual acuity in patients with amblyopia of mild and moderate degree significantly increased 5 days after the terahertz therapy and in cases of high amblyopia – 6 months later. The functional scotoma was eliminated in 30 patients. In 5 children it was removed after a repeated terahertz therapy which was carried out after 2 weeks. As a result of the elimination of functional scotoma the simultaneous vision was developed in 21 patients, the alternating monocular vision – in 14 children. Electrophysiological investigations with a registration of photopic negative responses confirmed an absence of depression of the retina after the terahertz radiation. Conclusions. The current study showed: 1) pleopto-orthoptic treatment with the use of terahertz therapy allows to increase significantly the visual acuity and to eliminate the functional scotoma; 2) the continuous mode of oscillation of terahertz influence is an effective mode of radiation as a component of the complex treatment of amblyopia, and the mode of amplitude-modulated oscillation – in the elimination of functional scotoma; 3) the terahertz therapy with millimeter waves is a very perspective and safe method of the treatment of amblyopia and the elimination of functional scotoma.
