Summary:<em>This article discusses health conditions of traditional fishermen in the village of Atafona, São Joao da Barra, RJ. The study presents them in their daily life, and discusses their experiences taking into consideration their social representations, beliefs and values. The International Labour Organization considers fishing as one of the world’s most stressful and dangerous professions. Their study indicates the importance of seeking preventive actions, and more frequent debates on the subject in order to avoid damages to the health of workers, thus improving their quality of life.</em>
