Descriptive-exploratory study conducted between January and March 2014. Data from 63 nurses was collected through an instrument with close-ended and open-ended questions. Content analysis and critical theorization of Karl Marx to interpret the nurses’ statements. The assessed categories were work in the Mobile Emergency Care Service – description of the activities, work process at the Mobile Emergency Care Service and what guides the professional actions taken. Given the nurses’ understanding of work and the elements of work process in the light of dialectical and historical materialism, the results obtained in this study were found to be connected with this theoretical foundation. It is concluded that the reflections made during the analysis of the referred categories can be useful to improve nursing care in this field.http://dx.doi.org/10.5380/ce.v20i3.40964AmbulancesEmergency medical servicesNursesWork
