Summary:This article deals with the historical-social process of transformation of the beaches of the sea of ​​Pernambuco, its forms of occupation, its uses and meanings, between 1840 and 1940. Among the factors that conditioned the changes - medical knowledge, economic, social, cultural and urban transformations - emphasis is given only to medical knowledge and to the understanding of how this knowledge influenced the creation of a new look on beaches, providing the discursive key that would result in economic valuation , social and cultural of that space and in the establishment of new behavioral patterns; representations, aesthetic conceptions and attitudes towards the body.
