| Summary: | This article deals with the historical-social process of transformation of the beaches of the sea of Pernambuco, its forms of occupation, its uses and meanings, between 1840 and 1940. Among the factors that conditioned the changes - medical knowledge, economic, social, cultural and urban transformations - emphasis is given only to medical knowledge and to the understanding of how this knowledge influenced the creation of a new look on beaches, providing the discursive key that would result in economic valuation , social and cultural of that space and in the establishment of new behavioral patterns; representations, aesthetic conceptions and attitudes towards the body. |
