Description
Summary:Research in the early archives of the the Archivo General de la Nación in Lima has enabled us to become acquainted with the population census and land distribution for the years 1733 and 1787 in the Lurin valley. From both kinds of sources it can be seen that an important part was played by the presence of local caciques who were able to maintain their position as native lords, and to continue to represent their peoples for more than two centuries after the Spanish conquest. In this new era they continued to adapt and to claim the prerogatives of their rights of succession to the position they were able to maintain from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
