Summary:Contemporary to the monumental Braudel’s work on the Mediterranean, few other historians and ethnologists were working on a similar topic form a Marxist perspective. In my article I analyze the major contribution of Charles Parrain (1893-1984) and André Georges Haudricourt (1911-1996) to the explanation of the oriental mode and the slave society of production by emphasizing the role of the technology and the materiality.
