Summary:The paper discusses the role of testing in teaching a foreign language to students of engineering majors. The problem of controlling skills and language skills has always been relevant in the methods of teaching foreign languages. Different categories and test types are considered. The authors give a detailed description of the structure of “multiple choice tests” used for assessing the implementation of competence approach applied in higher school. The paper also provides the algorithm for test developers.
