Description
Summary:This article proposes to highlight the diverse power mechanisms and practices of domination exerted by the mining company Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (known as Vale S.A.) in municipalities of the state of Maranhão, in the Brazilian Amazonian region. After around thirty years’ business operations in the Amazonian region, the power exerted by the company has increased towards the last few years, despite changes in its methods. One of the principle elements of our analysis looks at the imbrication of the company’s activities, and of its Foundation (Fundação Vale), in local public policy in three municipalities of the state (Açailândia, Alto Alegre do Pindaré and Arari) – characterized here as a process of private social planning, on the part of the company.
