Summary:The article discusses the epistemology of urban-rural studies and the way in which the topic has been addressed in geography. In this sense, it highlights the importance of the theoretical approaches of the forerunners of Rural Sociology to the concepts of rural and urban and their relationships. Additionally, it presents analytical developments in dealing with the issue in the context of the social sciences and carries out a reflection on spatial processes and the need for sophisticated theoretical approaches for the understanding of current rural-urban relations.
