Description
Summary:The history of Jewish Studies in Romania is inseparable from a history of exclusions, persecutions, deportations and mass murder. However, systematic exclusions and marginalization, as well as the tardy and repeatedly restricted access to the public education system do not prevent Romanian Jewish community from bringing an important contribution to the progress of the local cultural and scientific life. The crystallization of a field of Jewish Studies is – here, as elsewhere in Europe, – the result of an encounter between a lay education, indispensable to the integration process, and the attempt to maintain a living contact with Jewish cultural and religious heritage.
