Summary:This paper intends to establish connections between proposals concerning parks and green areas for São Paulo City (from the end of 19th Century to the beginnings of 1950), and the current ideas about public parks in urban environment, specifically in industrialized countries like England and United States. It points the main ideas about parks and green areas in these countries, and seeks its traces in the proposals for São Paulo City, remarking some discrepancies. In this way, it focuses on the Avenues Plan by the brazilian engineer Francisco Prestes Maia (1930), and the Improvement Program for São Paulo by Robert Moses (1950), inquiring about the reasons they have not been carried out
