Summary: | This text addresses the action of intellectuals in the educational field from analysis of the second
part of the book The Public Instruction in Piauí, published in 1922. While analyzing the conceptions of education of
the developed intellectuals in this research, seeks to understand the purpose of intervention In the reality that was
had by the action of these intellectuals since the research is inserted in a project of educational reform. We work
on the thematic of intellectuals considering what is elaborated by Xavier (2016), Vieira (2011), Bourdieu (1989) and
Gomes and Hansen (2016). It was concluded that the public debate as a way of explaining and convincing about the
relevance of their proposals was also a way to become intellectual and fill a space with the marks of their positions.
Publishing, speaking and organizing groups and actions outlined a way to be present in the public debate around
education. The desire to strengthen the public service dimension of the school and to organize it in order to train
man sufficiently for modernized economy recognized the importance of changes in organization and functioning of
the school network. Purposes of expansion of primary education and modification of the contents and of teaching
staff permeate the discourses of the intellectuals about education, with the main point being the production of ideas
for school intervention, either in teacher training or in the regulation of the school network or dissemination of pedagogical
ideas.
