Summary:The article is devoted to history of logging in a forestry situated near the border with Finland in Olonets guberniya at the last third of the 19th century — the beginning of the 20th century. The base of the research became archival documents that hadn’t been studied before. The attention to this territory is conditioned by special circumstances happened there in the 2nd half of the 20th century: resettlement all dwellers of some border villages to other places and as a result complete cessation of human economic activity in the region. Some time after that the Nature Reserve «Kostomukshskii» was established there to save the nature including old-aged forests remained from previous times when commercial logging took place. Now researchers have unique possibility to observe how nature rehabilitates during last decades. For these purposes our study gives important data about past human activity: volume and methods of logging, types and size of cutting trees. Information about the role of logging in local inhabitants’ life allows creating the whole picture of people and nature interaction at the studied period in one local territory.
