New perspectives on the difference between process and product in writing combined with a deeper understanding of the relationship between thinking and writing have dramatically changed the way that writing is now taught. In addition, writing has become increasingly viewed
 as a means, not just an end, of learning. These insights first influenced instruction in composition classes; however, they soon led to the development of programs involving content courses throughout the undergraduate curriculum.
