Description
Summary:The aim of this study was to present the current state of knowledge on the role of selenium in the treatment of Hashimoto’s disease. In recent years, the number of cases of autoimmune Hashimoto’s thyroiditis – a chronic disease that usually leads to hypothyroidism – has increased. Most patients have elevated levels of anti-TPO antibodies. The presence of these antibodies has an effect on subsequent thyroid damage. So far we have not developed an effective, standard therapy of this disease. However, more attention is being paid to the relationship between supplementation of selenium deficiency and inhibition of production of anti-TPO antibodies in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Therefore, selenium supplementation may be an effective option in the treatment of this disease.
