Summary:<p class="x-----------" xml:lang="en-US">The article reviews approaches of foreign and national researchers to studying institutional diversity in higher education.</p><p class="x-----------" xml:lang="en-US">The research <span class="char-style-override-1">aims</span> to study the building of set behavior patterns and organization of higher educational institutions’ performance. The author considers institutional diversity as a certain state achieved by higher education system during a certain period and identifies referent field of notions which are typical for formalized and unformalized (reflected / not reflected in the official description) level of higher education diversity. The author describes approaches to studying institutional dynamics of national system of higher education from the stakeholders’ perspectives. The conducted research of concepts of institutional diversity in higher education enables the author to systemize them due to the subject of investigation and reveal essential distinctions in methods of studying formalized and unformalized structures.</p>
