The Swedish novelist Jan Fridegård belongs to the so-called proletarian school. The principal aim of proletarian writers was to denounce the social injustices they had suffered and witnessed during their youth and to offer the people a new kind of literature. In a trilogy set in the Viking Age, Fridegård established historical continuity between the slaves in ancient Scandinavia and the farm workers of the first half of the 20th century. In order to reflect the social and political demands of his deprived original milieu, the novelist narrates a series of popular revolts led by the fugitive thrall Holme in 9th century Sweden.
