The Limits of Platonism: Gregory of Nazianzus and the Invention of <i>theōsis</i>

Gregory’s idea of <em>theōsis</em>, which came to be influential in Eastern Christianity, draws not on a Platonic notion of imitation of God but more on the Stoics’ ‘familiarity’ with the divine.
