Description
Summary:This paper returns to ‘The Stranger’ by Alfred Schütz in order to examine the conception of belonging that is a fundamental feature of this social phenomenology. By demonstrating how Schütz neglects the problem of hospitality, the text also raises the question of the compatibility of this social theory with pragmatism. It argues that there is a continuity between Schütz and Garfinkel by highlighting the family likeness between Schütz’s stranger and Garfinkel’s transsexual, Agnes, and ends with a similar appraisal of the pragmatist character of ethnomethodology.
