Signaler l’élève difficile : de l’aide préventive à la gestion précautionneuse

Teachers believe that students with behavioural difficulties are too invisible among the general population of pupils with learning difficulties “reported” statistically by national assessments. Our field survey highlights the way such pupils with disruptive behaviour are then picked out, specifically treated and definitively stigmatized. Generalist teachers saw them as responsible for their painful professional experience. Since they consider them as “unmanageable” in ordinary classes, they are keen to identify and refer them to specialists. Therefore, within the educational institution, a specific category of pupils emerges: “the difficult pupil”. The notification forms supplied by teachers teach us about the construction of this academic and social problem. From prevention and the application of a precautionary approach, the Institution is then lead to a more technical –and explicit– precocious social control.
