This article discusses the spatial production of both com m erce and services in the urban periphery, based on studies conducted in Salvador, Bahia. The form ation of "centralities" (concentration of both com m erce and services in sp ecific areas) and the profile of the consum ers are the main focus of the research. O ther issues discussed are the accesability of urban nuclei and their hierarchization. Milton San to s's theory a ru t two "circu its" of the urban econom y is an im portant reference of this work, which also seeks to introduce new concepts that are related to the form ation of "centralities" of com m erce and services in the urban periphery such as "consolid ated nuclei" versus "unstable nuclei" and "artificial space" versus "space of soldified relations
