Description
Summary:This paper intends to complement Miguel Ángel Pérez Priego’s article, “La escritura proverbial de Santillana” (1992), which approaches the question of stylistic variation introduced by the Proverbios or Centiloquio in the poetic production of the Marquis of Santillana. By placing the poems within the generic category of the proverb, Pérez Priego identifies the particular features of proverbial writing in Santillana’s text, and, at the same time, distinguishes the stylistic uses of proverbs and sayings according to the types of poems in which they are included. Through the study of the interpolation of paraemiae in his lengthy doctrinal poems, in representative lyric compositions and prose texts, we are able to contribute to another distinguishing aspect of the proverbial speech of the poet: the confluence of the medieval paraemiological tradition and the new humanist paradigms. This is the result of the vast erudition and knowledge of the classic Antiquity, as well as of a continuous interest in popular culture, that typify the work and formation of the Marquis of Santillana.
