Les violences envers les femmes dans le cadre du couple en Polynésie française

Violent acts against women affect their health, their integrity and human dignity. Following the national survey on violence against women (ENVEFF) conducted in France in 2000, a survey was carried out in French Polynesia, where intra-family violence and sexual abuse are considered by the inhabitants as a major public health issue. This paper presents the findings of both quantitative and qualitative parts of the survey concerning intimate partner violence. Taking into account some social and cultural specific features (the very frequent presence of the family, the economic position of men and women, the role of alcohol…) leads us to a better comprehension of the relations between men and women and domestic abuse in the Polynesian Archipelago.
