About 80% of inpatients with depression and 70% of outpatients with this condition complain of sleep disorders. There are presently a few available hypotheses of the onset of depressive disorders. Prominent among them are neurotransmitter dysfunction hypotheses and chronobiological concepts (the presence of altered circadian rhythms mediated by melatonin).
