It is possible to visualize the route followed in the choices of research issues and the beginning of a series of projects and directions to growth and recognition of the Brazilian occupational therapy. The participation with the research funding grants and the strengthening of research activities are presented. Recounts the history of the foundation of the Occupational Therapy Program at Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar), the first research laboratory in Occupational Therapy in Brazil, the Journal of Occupational Therapy - UFSCar and also the Postgraduate Program in Occupational Therapy UFSCar (PPGTO).
