Purpose
To determine optimal time for repeated eye surgery on the base of analysis of the rate of early postoperative inflammatory reactions at different terms after previous surgeries.
Material and methods
The study was performed in 494 patients (group 1) who had undergone different repeated surgeries in one eye. These patients were divided into 2 subgroups: patients who were subjected to two surgeries (subgroup 1A — 312 patients) and patients who had underwent several surgeries — 3 to 6 (subgroup 1B — 182 patients). Group 2 (1740 patients) comprised patients operated one time. Early postoperative inflammatory reaction was studied 1–7 days, 8–14 days, 3–4 weeks, 1–3 months, 6,5–12 months and more than one year after the previous surgery.
Results
The rate and degree of early postoperative inflammatory reactions in patients after repeated eye surgeries are significantly higher than these parameters after primary surgeries and depend on the number of previous surgeries, type of the surgery and time interval after the last surgery. This allowed us to determine optimal periods for repeated surgeries with minimal inflammatory complications.
Conclusions
1. Repeated eye surgeries cause early postoperative inflammatory reactions more frequently than single ones. Multiple operations, phacoemulsification of complicated cataract with IOL implantation and secondary IOL implantation cause it to the greatest degree.
2. The highest rate of complications was recorded within 1-3 months after two surgeries and within one year after several surgeries that determines optimal time periods being 1-3 months for the second surgery and more than one year after multiple surgeries.
