“ La masacre de Ambo ” : histoire d’une révolte paysanne (Département de Huánuco, Pérou, 1962-1963)

Throug a history of the community’s rebellion (Huaylla y Aclacancha, in Ambo’s valley, department of Huánuco), we can understand how peasants (comuneros) organize themselves to defend their community’s lands. Analysis of peasants’ requests sent to the governmental authorities shows the importance, for the community, to claim their rights and possessions by using legal actions as well as land occupation. The use of both ways of revendication doesn’t explain the rush of violence, known in the press as la masacre de Ambo. The analysis of contexts in which all the actors (comuneros, trade-unionists, politics authorities, policemen and landowners) are acting is one way to understand why this community’s requests have led to the death of comuneros.
