Description
Summary:This article builds on the theoretical contributions of Pierre Bourdieu, Philippe Ariès and Michel Foucault aiming at examining concepts and central institutions for Developmental Psychology. Using the feature of historical distance to shape the epistemological debate, this article examines how the notion of development, suffering shifts in meaning as a result of historical changes that leads to the formation of nation states forged in the ideal of progress. The notion of development is supported by educational institutions, which are engaged in formation of new citizens, and reinforced by the capitalist context. Finally, we discuss the way developmental psychology, heiress and collaborator of this ideal – with achievements, but also paradoxes and contradictions – could reflexively rethink the concept of development in dialogue with several areas, stressing the importance of collective welfare, as well as communal and ancestral relations. The issue here is to propose a pluri-epistemic dialogical perspective as a way of integrating Psychology into the contemporary world.
