Summary:The article aims to show the need to review the historical approach of social relations prevailing in the sixteenth century, adjusting the concepts used to understand how they developed. It has as the object of study the meaning of education in Brazil in the sixteenth / seventeenth century. First we explain the representation of the world then in place, the order putting itself as the unit / universe, the concept of body delineating the society, the divine presence formatting understandings. Then we defined education as assimilation of this form of representation of the order. Finally we describe the work of the Society of Jesus, delegated by the king to the mission of evangelization of the Indians, showing the college and the studies as active expression of that education
