Description
Summary:The dialogue titled Pharmacodilosis o declaración medicinal by the physician Nicolás Monardes presents the controversy about the use of «aggregative» pills of the Arabian pharmacological tradition, that are rejected by humanist physicians who support remedies made of pure and unaltered substances. The spokesman of the author insists to promote the reading of botanical texts by Greek authors in their original language and to guarantee in this manner a better knowledge of medical plants, preferably the indigenous ones. The origin of the controversy goes back to the debate about the errors of Pliny that arose in Italy at the end of the fifteenth century. In the 1530s the polemic about botanical blunders and their origin in the Arabian tradition acquired a European dimension and got mingled with discussions on religious orthodoxy.
