Summary: | University and research libraries are being forced either to make decisions for deselection of new periodical titles or cancellation of the available subscriptions, due to rapidly increasing subscription costs, particularly those in pure and applied sciences. Several criteria have been developed to help makin such decisions and to determine the value of periodicals. These criteria also include the Impact Factor (IF) values, several attributes of periodicals and their geographic availability. In this paper, IF value is used as a limitation criterion in selecting the scientific periodicals; the highest IF valued periodical of each scientific discipline is regarded as significant and included in the coverage. 146 periodicals that carry the highest IF in their pure and applied sciences disciplines are investigated with respect to various attributes of periodicals as well as their availability at the university libraries in Ankara and Ulakbim Cahit Arf Information Center. Based on the results of this study, it is found out that 146 periodicals are valuable as regards to sevei'al attributes of periodicals and the ratio of availability of periodical subscriptions for 1998 at the university libraries in Ankara is 61.6 %. The 1998 subscription renewals for these periodicals have not been made in Ulakbim Cahit Arf Information Center. |
