Description
Summary:This article presents the main results of a research which had the aim of observing, describing, and interpreting the characteristics and the relationships of some Italian groups of football supporters. Among the various forms of support, the research focused on the hooliganism, paying attention to the symbolic value of identity and social representation. One of the main objectives of this study was to analyse consolidated behavioural patterns (passed on by word of mouth and called “hooligans codes”) and mechanisms related to their legitimacy and capacity to build consensus in different groups of supporters. These codes distinguish the hooligans from the other supporters, pointing out the distinctions and the contradictions that make it difficult to clearly define the hooligan and their value and norms references. This is particularly true in the case of interpretation of deviance and conflict.
