Summary:Heavy rains and typhoons cause major disasters, including great economic losses and casualties, in China. Therefore, it is very important to research these torrential rains and typhoons in order to improve forecasting accuracy to mitigate their consequences. The Center of Disaster Reduction of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has cooperated with the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at the University of Maryland in the US in studying heavy rains and typhoons for over 7 years. Some of the findings from the study of heavy rains and typhoons are introduced in this paper.
