Summary: | Objective: To know the perception of cancer patients about the practice of nursing care, especially palliative care performed in a doctor’s surgery in a public hospital in western Santa Catarina, southern Brazil.
Method: Cross-sectional, exploratory and descriptive study of qualitative approach, developed with 10 patients diagnosed with cancer, hospitalized in a surgical clinic of a public hospital in Santa Catarina, after approval by the Research Ethics Committee.
Results: The focus of nursing care involved procedural aspects, such as assistance in hygiene, dressing changes, venous infusions and check vital signs, unaccompanied guidance on procedures and nursing care.
Conclusions: It is necessary to develop strategies to strengthen communication and practice of palliative care by nurses in cancer care in surgical patients in order to contribute to the promotion of health and quality of life of these individuals.
